THE FINLANDIA HALL – A FEAST OF MUSIC AND EVENTS
The Finlandia Hall, designed by Alvar Aalto and recognised throughout the world as a symbol of the city of Helsinki, has aroused people's emotions ever since it was opened on 2nd December 1971. For the last thirty years it has been the scene of unforgettable concerts, significant conferences and all manner of other events.
This generously illustrated book traces the history of the Finlandia Hall from a number of perspectives. It evokes vivid memories of concerts of classical and light music performed by artists from Isaac Stern to Frank Zappa, recalls meetings such as the 1975 Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe and many major scientific gatherings, and tells us of celebrations, exhibitions and fashion shows. It also introduces us to the ideas that were in the mind of the great Finnish architect at the design and construction stages, considers the importance of this project in the context of his life's work and describes some of the details of the building's colourful history.
