Elias Lönnrotin ensimmäinen runonkeruuretki Itä-Suomeen alkaa Sammatista ja jatkuu aina
Valamoon ja Nurmekseen saakka päättyen lopulta Laukkoon. Lönnrot halusi "nähdä laajemmin
omaa maata, oppia tuntemaan sen kieltä eri murteiden mukaan, mutta varsinkin koota sen
merkillisen ja kauniin kansanrunouden tuotteita". Hauskat vierailut tuttavien luona viivyttivät
Lönnrotin matkantekoa ja runojen keruu jäi usein sivuseikaksi, mutta hän sai kyllä kuulla ja kokea
paljon muuta mielenkiintoista. Teos on suomennettu vuonna 1902 ja tämä nide on Vaeltajan neljäs
