Let's read Thai is designed for Thais abroad who haven't learned to read their native language and for those who can speak Thai but struggle with reading. Based on Esa Kylänpää’s personal journey, the book guides learners through the practical challenges of mastering Thai literacy.
Suitable for: for adult education
Let's read Thai! -book is especially targeted for
1) Thais who live abroad and have never learned to read their native language.
2) People who can manage spoken everyday situations in Thai but cannot read (or write) basically anything.
You also need ambition and patience. Learning to read Thai is a long journey but it is worth the effort.
This material is based on the writers own experience and tailored first for Finnish speakers. So this is kind of a refined version. The book consists of features of letters and words that confused the writer when struggling to read.
The goal of this book is achieved when an active user begins to understand Thai texts. Intermediate milestones can include recognizing different letters and letter combinations, then words within a continuous text – when reading modest writing skills will come as a bonus.
As there are many characters, some of which look very similar, and some are very rarely used, not to mention different typefaces, learning to read Thai is a challenge.
Writer started modestly by deciphering signs and instructions and friends' posts in Facebook. Then, books became part of the picture.
Esa Kylänpää (university language teacher, 75), lived partly in Thailand for 25 years studying Thai by himself just for fun.
