What is nature's influence on Finnish visual art, architecture and design? An attempt to answer this and other questions is made in this book. Finns live close to nature, which is not only a source of inspiration but is in many concrete ways present in our visual arts. Another markedly characteristic Finnish feature is the unbroken connection with folk tradition, whose rich but functionally simplified form language is still a feature especially in our design and architecture. On the other hand, international art movements have also enriched Finnish expression which, for its own part, has gained international importance. In architecture, for example, Alvar Aalto's humane functionalism and design are world-famous. In this book a general view is given of modern Finnish architecture, design and visual arts, without forgetting their roots. At the same time the book deals with the mutual relations and interactions between these fields.
