"Och framför allt jag älskar beduinen och hans öken", skriver orientalisten Georg August Wallin i ett brev efter sin första ökenfärd på Arabiska halvön 1846. I den fjärde delen av Wallins samlade dagböcker och brev får vi följa honom under två ökenfärder. Den första förde honom bl.a. på vallfärd till Mekka och Medina, men framför allt vistades han i fyra månader i staden al-Jauf i den norra delen av Arabiska halvön där han gjorde anteckningar både om det talade språket och om vardagslivet bland ortsbefolkningen. Den andra ökenfärden gick till Syro-Palestina, där han besökte kristendomens, judendomens och islams gemensamma heliga platser. Wallin reste som muslim och i denna volym ingår också dagboksanteckningar som han skrev på svenska med arabisk skrift för att inte röja sin egentliga identitet.
