This volume takes readers to the Arabic and Persian-speaking regions of the mid-19th century, where explorer Georg August Wallin made significant linguistic and cultural observations. Wallin’s letters and diaries offer a unique insight into the ethnography and linguistics of the era.

Den femte delen av Georg August Wallins Skrifter innehåller material från Wallins tid i Kairo hösten 1847 och sommaren 1849 samt från hans resa över Arabiska halvöns norra delar och därifrån till Persien 1848–1849. Största delen av materialet består av långa brev som Wallin skrev i Bagdad och Kairo och skickade hem till familj och vänner. Dagsnotiserna och väderleksanteckningarna i volymen skrev han på svenska med arabiskt skrift för att inte röja att han var västerlänning. Georg August Wallin reste i Mellanöstern i sju år för att forska i arabiska dialekter, men hans anteckningar och brev innehåller också en mängd etnografiska och geografiska iakttagelser. I Skrifter utges hans skriftliga kvarlåtenskap i sin helhet i textkritisk form.
