Harri Willamon teos pureutuu venäläisiin kansanikoneihin, tarkastellen niiden ainutlaatuista sommittelua, värejä ja yksinkertaisia linjoja, jotka ilmentävät alkukirkon tunnelmaa. Kirja vertailee kansanikoneiden maailmaa taidehistoriallisesti hienostuneempiin ikoniperinteisiin, avaten ikonitaiteen moniulotteisuutta.
"Olen harrastanut ikoneja 25 vuoden ajan. Jo pian alitani kerätä niitä huomioni kiintyi yksinkertaisesti maalattuihin kansankoneihin. Niiden sommittelut sekä värien ja viivojen yksinkertaisuus vaikuttivat aluksi hämmentävästi, mutta ajan mittaan ne tulivat yhä läheisemmiksi. Kun vertasin esimerkiksi 1600-luvun hienolla miniatyyritekniikalla maalattuja Stroganovin tai Palekh'in ikoneja tässä kirjassa kuvattuihin kansanikoneihin, löysin kaksi aivan erilaista maailmaa, kaksi saman asian ääripäätä, joiden väliin mahtuvat ikoniteoksen kaikki muodot. Tämän päivän kansanikonit edustavat minulle alkukirkon tunnelmaa."

"During these 25 years I have first read literature about icons and collected them and eventually I started buying and selling icons, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, in order to finance my collecting. I was immediately attracted to the simply painted folk-icons because to me they give the feeling of the early Church. Their composition, colours and simple lines may at first surprise the viewer, but in time they become clearer and dearer. Comparing the miniature paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries from, for example, Stroganov and Palekh with icons shown in this book it becomes evident that they are two extremes of one subject between which are found many varieties."
