Stadens invånare och stadslivet står i centrum i denna bok som SLS ger ut för att uppmärksamma att Helsingfors firar 200 år som huvudstad. Bilderna, som är hämtade ur SLS arkiv, är från tiden 1890-1910 och är tagna av bl.a. amatörfotograferna Gustaf Sandberg, Karl Konrad Meinander och Frans Nyberg, men även av professionella fotografer som Karl Emil Ståhlberg. Fotografierna kombineras med citat ur samtida skönlitterära Helsingforsskildringar och boken inleds med en artikel av Laura Kolbe.
