"I for Iridescence" collects thought-provoking dialogues between Jani Ruscica and a range of artists, curators, writers, and scholars, blending artistic experimentation with intimate, personal reflection. Serving as a platform for collaboration, this book explores the shifting boundaries of meaning in contemporary art.
Suitable for: for adults interested in contemporary art and artist dialogues
‘I for Iridescence' is an artist book featuring dialogues Jani Ruscica has had with other artists, writers, curators and scholars. The book functions as a meeting ground, a platform for reciprocal reflections on the practices of all its contributors. Within the last couple of years Ruscica has engaged in conversation with artist Tomaso Binga, artist Dineo Seshee Bopape, curator Diana Campbell, scholar and artist Angus Carlyle, scholar Lex Morgan Lancaster and writer Taneli Viljanen.
Throughout the dialogues manifold formal concerns and experiments get inextricably entangled with personal, even intimate reflections.
‘I for Iridescence' is sprinkled with an artistic intervention in the form of confetti made of recycled paper Ruscica produced for their work ‘*Fate a modo vostro o com'é scritto nelle stelle'.
Jani Ruscica works across mediums of moving and printed image, sculpture and performance. Central to the artist's practice is the slippage and simultaneity of meaning animated by forms that move, stretch, shape-shift, and exceed the borders of time, space, and bodies.
Working with fragmentary signs or images we think we already know, Ruscica deploys the pseudo-familiar to undermine immediate legibility in favour of precarious, improvisational processes.
Their interdisciplinary practice has lead to a wide range of collaborations and commissions; amongst others with Camden Art Centre and Animate Projects in London, MoMA PS1, Creative Time and MTV global in New York. Their works are also held in public and private collections (e.g. the Centre Pompidou in Paris and Kiasma, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
