Kaikki eivät kuitenkaan tästä innostu; osa on saanut jo talvisodassa tarpeekseen, ja jotkut kokevat sodan Neuvostoliittoa vastaan aattellisesti vastenmieliseksi. Pohjoissuomalaisessa syrjäkylässä joukko miehiä päättää kutsukirjeen saatuaan häipyä metsään, metsäkartiin. Heitä ryhtyy jäljittämään saman kylän toista aatelaitaa edustava joukko. Tragedia huipentuu kesän kääntyessä sateiseksi syksyksi.
