Överste Osvald Rafael Bäckman tjänstgjorde som yngre adjutant för marskalken av Finland, friherre Gustaf Mannerheim åren 1942-1946. Bäckman fick observera honom på mycket nära håll och tidvis fick han också se glimtar av mannen bakom den offentliga bilden. Bäckman behöll kontakten med marskalk Mannerheim även efter hans tid som president, och blev den förste intendenten för Mannerheimmuseet i marskalkens hem i Brunnsparken 1951-1966. På ett distingerat och respektfullt sätt berättar han om sina personliga erfarenheter i Mannerheims närhet, erfarenheter som också belyser marskalk Mannerheims privata liv.
