GPRS in Wireless Data is a compact, yet comprehensive technical presentation about the new packet data transfer method of GSM. It is a suitable book for telecommunication courses at technical university and institute level, and can be used as training and reference material for operator's, equipment manufacturer's and service provider's personnel.
The book gives an introduction to GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), as GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is one of the main services combining both systems. GPRS can actually be considered as a combination of 2nd and 3rd generation mobile networks.
The book describes the new elements, interfaces and functioning of GPRS. The chapters give information about the GPRS radio channels, terminals, signalling, transmission methods, protocols, billing aspects and service aspects with QoS (quality of service) considerations. The book also gives information about the specification issues and the evolution of GPRS, including EGPRS (Enhanced GPRS).
The main weight of the text is put on the planning aspects. The book describes in detail, from different points of view, the effects of the GPRS on "basic" GSM network planning methods. The results of the planning chapter are based on the simulations and practical studies on the functioning of GPRS.
The author, Mr. Jyrki Penttinen, has gained a great deal of experience in GPRS while working for the Finnish GSM and UMTS operator Sonera. He participated in the GPRS specification work in ETSI SMG groups during 1996-99. He has investigated GPRS on a detailed level both in theory and in practice. Having main work in the GSM and UMTS field, Mr. Penttinen has also organised international training and given presentations at several technical conferences. He has published several versatile articles and books about mobile communications. Nowadays, he organises his training and publishing activities via Finsetel Ltd.
