Märtha Norrback : A Gentleman's Home - The Museum of Gustaf Mannerheim, Marshal of Finland

Baron Gustaf Mannerheim (1867–1951), Marshal of Finland, is one of the most intriguing and significant figures in Finnish history. Apart from being Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Army and both Regent and President of Finland, he was an explorer, a warm-hearted, charitable man, founder of the Mannerheim Child Welfare Association, a cosmopolitan and speaker of many languages, a well-known gourmet and a hospitable entertainer of guests in his own home.

The house in Kaivopuisto, in the heart of Helsinki, where Gustaf Mannerheim lived for the period 1924–1951 was opened to the public as a museum on November 3rd, 1951. This history of the man and the museum provides a broad insight into his life and work through the medium of his home. The richly illustrated book contains articles by experts on many aspects of Mannerheim's life and personality and on the history of the museum itself, its architecture and furnishings, its works of art, the objects that its occupant brought back from all over the world, its vast library and Mannerheim's uniforms and decorations.
