Den unge fortifikationsofficeren Mikael Hisinger begav sig på en studieresa till kontinenten tillsammans med officerskollegan Carl Råbergh 1783. Under sin grand tour skulle de främst studera befästningsverk, men de bekantade sig också med järnbruk, civil arkitektur, antik konst och trädgårdar. En av de starkaste upplevelserna var parken Ermenonville utanför Paris, anlagd i den nya engelska stilen. En del av intrycken från resan omsatte Hisinger senare i praktiken på Fagervik i Västra Nyland, där han blev brukspatron efter sin far och anlade en park i engelsk stil.
