Paintings and writings of a modern artist from his formative years up to the present
Osmo Rauhala (born 1957) is one of the foremost modern artists in Finland. His works deal mainly with the relation between man and nature, a theme that is closely bound up with his occupation as an organic farmer and his philosophical views on the environment.
This book not only introduces the reader to his paintings but also deals for the first time in print with his installations based on photographical and video techniques and contains some previously unpublished works from the early part of his career. Alongside these, it provides a collage of his thoughts on the origins of individual works and his writings on nature, art, the environment and ways of life. Cross-disciplinary dimensions are opened up by a discussion between the artist and the biologist Anto Leikola on the relation between pictures, science and nature, an article by Markku Valkonen, curator of the Espoo Art Museum, on Osmo Rauhala's art, and an essay by the art historian Inkamaija Iitiä on the ethics of art and Rauhala's criticism of science.
