Since the original edition of this book appeared in 1989, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the holder of the world's largest collection of Rembrandts, has undertaken a huge programme of restoration, which has so far extended to seven of the artist's late works, including the world renowned Syndics and Jewish Bride. The museum has striven for greater openness, in many cases leaving traces of earlier restoration intact, in recognition of its historical importance.
This revised, full-colour edition contains Rembrandt's 60 most important paintings, twelve of which are reproduced in brand new colour illustrations. These include the recently restored late works, and the Portrait of Johannes Wtenbogaert, acquired by the Rijksmuseum in 1992, which replaces The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deyman, requested back by its owner.
This revised edition continues to present a compendium of Rembrandt's life and work. Annemarie Vels Heijn's clear and authoritative text not only discusses Rembrandt's life and artistic career, but also provides background particulars of his sitters and details of the stories illustrated in his paintings.
