Teos on ensimmäinen kokonaisesitys poroerotuksista tokan kokoamisesta teurastukseen. Näkökulma on kulttuurihistoriallinen: kunkin työvaiheen muutoksia valaistaan tekniikan ja lainsäädännön kehityksen taustaa vasten paliskuntalaitoksen synnystä Euroopan unioniin saakka.
Lähtökohtana ovat neljä eri puolilla Lapinmaata sijaitsevaa erotuspaikkaa, joiden rakenteet ja rakennukset Museovirasto on kunnostanut nähtävyyskohteiksi. Kenttä- ja arkistoaineiston avulla valaistaan muun muassa poroerotuksen ekologisia ja sosiaalisia tekijöitä.
Talviset poroerotukset olivat vaativan työrupeaman ohella tärkeä sosiaalinen tapahtuma. Tätä puolta kuvattaessa annetaan puheenvuoro poromiehille itselleen.
