Uuden ajan alun Itämeri oli ahdas, vilkas ja varsinkin syyspimeällä vaarallinen merialue. Onnettomuuksia tapahtui usein, mutta kauppalaivan haaksirikko saattoi olla joillekin myös onnenpotku. Hylkyjen pelastajat kerryttivät itselleen suuren omaisuuden, ja joidenkin kerrotaan rikastumisen toivossa jopa houkutelleen laivoja tahallaan karille.
