Herman Rechberger's (1947-2022) book Scales and Modes around the World (2008) presents over 1,000 scales found in different cultures. It is a result of extensive research, listening and discussions with musicians, and is intended for everyone who is creative in the field of music.

Chapter 2 presents the modes, covers the notation of ancient Greek and Byzantine music and modes, the medieval church modes, Hungarian Gipsy modes, chromatic modes...
Chapter 3 presents non-western scales: the Arab tone system, the music of Persia/Iran, the Turkish musical system, the Indian musical systems, Japan, China, and many more. Chapter 4 presents microtonal systems.
