Jack Fields : Finland Creates : the inter-relationship of land and design in Finland

FINLAND CREATES is a picturebook about Finland. In the book we see Finland through the eyes of foreigners, for the subjects and pictures were chosen by the photographers themselves, Jack Fields, an American, and David Moore, an Australian. Thus we have their view of what Finland is and what it has that is worth saying. The result will no doubt make Finns themselves rethink their ideas about Finland; to take a wider view of their country. But FINLAND CREATES is primarily the photographers' own interpretation of the links between the Finnish landscape and that many-sided creativity that has taken Finland to the fore among the international practitioners of the fields of design, architecture and art. Jack Fields and David Moore came looking for the reasons that underlie the international reputation of Finnish design. We see the result of their search in this book - in the pictures and in the links between them. The photographers do not want to regard these as real answers, but rather as their own interpretations, and as stimuli to others.

The pictures are supported by Pekka Suhonen's text, which unflamboyantly yet precisely describes the Finnish landscape and traces the development of the essence and preconditions of Finnish creativity up to the present day.
