"Winterson has re-written The Book of Genesis and turned it into a surreal Cecil B De Mille epic. Feminism and Twentieth Century kitchenware run riot in the ancient city of Ur; Noah is Howard Hughes crossed with Frankenstein – an eccentric overseer of thriving capitalism who makes 'God by accident out of a piece of gâteau and a giant electric toaster.'
The result is a tetchy, omnipotent ice-cream cone who decides to drown all the decadence of Winterson's world (and, curiously, that world resembles Queensway) in a flood – out of which, of course, a more fitting myth can be born, i.e. that God is a benevolent old man with a white beard who loves us all.
Occasionally, Winterson ceases to be a jester and seriously explores the power of myth ('they explain the universe while allowing the universe to go on being unexplained ...') and of faith ('when the heart revolts it wants outrageous things that cannot possibly be factual ...'). I could have done with a bit more of this and less jokes about fast food. But then I prefer depressing books, and Winterson has proved with Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit how popular her wit is"
