The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters was founded in 1908 for the purpose of promoting academic research, functioning as a high-level bond between scholars and fostering international contacts. In order to achieve these aims it arranges meetings for discussion and the presentation of papers, publishes academic journals, distributes prizes and grants and issues statements and proposals regarding science and higher education policy. It is an independent academy of science and letters on the traditional European model.
This volume examines the Academy’s activities and its position on the Finnish higher education scene over the hundred years of its existence and reflects on its significance as part of the international academic community.
