The house of Roismala lies on the shore of Lake Liekovesi in prosperous Upper Satakunta in southern Finland. Its noble-born lady, Saura Goldclasp, is a magnificent woman, but childless. The powerful Kaukamo, Saura’s brother, has married her to his supporter, Pirjanti. A concubine, Silpa, also lives in the house, for the clan needs heirs.
Then a Gotlandish merchant and navigator, Sigvalde of Bomunds, arrives at Roismala by ship. Sigvalde is a brave man who knows the world and the mind of woman.
A time of violent change begins. People’s destinies are shaken and given an entirely new direction. Honour and power, justice, feeling and intellect, human strength and courage are weighed in the balance.
