Helsinki was founded, mostly with commercial interests in mind, by King Gustav Vasa in 1550, when Finland was part of Sweden. It became the capital in 1812, when the country was a Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire, and continued in this role after independence in 1917.

Helsinki is both a gateway to the Baltic and a gateway on the Baltic. Its whole existence and prosperity has derived from its position between two centres of power, Stockholm and St. Petersburg.
