Veijo Meren kokoelmateos esittelee Suomen vaiherikasta historiaa sotien, poliittisten käänteiden ja kulttuurin läpi elävin ajankuvin.
Coincidence, misunderstanding, femmes fatales, indecision, difficult paths – history is made up of human fates
Beneath the Polar Star is a compilation gleaned from historical works by the writer Veijo Meri: Maassa taivaan saranat (The Hinges of Heaven on Earth), Huonot tiet, hyvät hevoset (Bad Roads, Good Horses), Ei tule väivatta vapaus (The Price of Freedom) and Suurta olla pieni kansa (Great to Be a Small Nation). The 23 writings in the book convey the reader along the road of Finnish history. The journey twists and turns through the rule of Sweden and of Russia and through many wars to independent Finland. Expressive period sketches bring to life the obstinate courage of the Hakkapeliitta troopers, the Kalevala rune singers, great men of great individuality; they recall the lustre of the Tsars, the hustle and bustle of the mills, the suspense and drama of World War II. In Meri's firm, unbiased grasp, old legends and events are skilfully combined, making history vividly alive. The book is available in Finnish, Swedish, English, French and German.
Veijo Meri, Member of the Finnish Academy, has been writing since 1954. Besides historical works, he has published collections of short stories and essays, plays, poetry and novels. He has received a number of noteworthy awards.
